To further reduce life cycle costs and environmental impact DIAB is introducing Divinycell F40 for its aerospace customers. With a low density of 40 kg/cu.m., Divinycell F40 provides the opportunity to save more weight and extends the selection of cores that are available for interior applications. Almost certainly the key objective in the aerospace industry is to decrease the lifetime cost of a component or system. At the same time there is a strong demand to reduce any environmental impact. In the aerospace market meeting both requirements can be a real challenge as they are often difficult to combine. Reduced environmental impact is often related to decreased weight in order to improve fuel consumption and extend an aircraft’s range and payload. However, decreased weight places increased demands on the design, the manufacturing processes and the materials that are used. At the same time the quality and safety requirements of the aerospace industry leave no room for errors. In DIAB’s experience, looking at design and manufacturing in combination with the right materials from a holistic point of view can lead to improvements in all areas. DIAB’s core material solution for aricraft interiors - Divinycell F series - has been developed to meet all these requirements. Divinycell F was developed specifically to be an excellent alternative to honeycombs, for commercial aircraft interiors of offering reductions in weight and manufacturing costs. It offers a wide temperature envelope; works well with most resin systems and can be recycled. Divinycell F also exceeds both the European and US FST (fire, smoke and toxicity) regulations. Using Divinycell F compared to honeycombs reduces the amount of edge and detail filling thereby reducing weight. Divinycell F also requires less ‘sweep and sand’ operations than honeycombs due to its smooth surface finish. Also Divinycell F provides a great level of design freedom as it is much more formable than honeycombs and provides an excellent surface finish that is suitable for painting. These unique characteristics makes it an excellent core material for interiors enabling manufacturers to decrease life time cost and environmental impact.
