Discovery Yachts (Southampton, UK) has built an enviable reputation for constructing some of the most sought-after ocean cruising yachts. It was founded in 1998 by John Charnley, with the aim to create world-cruising yachts designed specifically for those wishing to enjoy extended cruising without the need for a crew.

Performance, luxury and effortless handling
Now it has added to its range a 15.4 meter (50 ft.) state-of-the-art, Bill Dixon designed catamaran for luxury bluewater cruising.

The Discovery 50 Cat embraces the hallmarks of Discovery Yachts: performance, luxury and effortless handling. She is a blue-water thoroughbred for exhilarating sailing across oceans yet, with a beam of 7.8 meters (25 ft.), has all the quality and comforts to give real pleasure when living on board – including the fact that she can be easily handled by just two people.

High performance through composites
In order to produce a high performance boat, Discovery Yachts went for a lightweight sandwich composite based on high density. Diab cores are the principle materials used for both the hulls and decks.

This results in a hull and deck with exceptional stiffness and ‘built-in’ thermal and sound insulation, important when cruising and living aboard for long periods. Vinylester resins are used throughout for higher laminate performance and to resist osmosis problems. Although woven e-glass is the principle reinforcement, carbon fiber is used in specific high-load areas of the vessel, and woven Kevlar provides additional impact resistance throughout the forward part of the hulls.

Both the hull and central bridge are moulded as one complete unit, using female molds. The deck is also moulded as a single piece moulding. Diab cores are used for the internal lightweight bulkheads, along with carbon fiber. This means that, when the deck is secured to the hull, the whole structure is very strong and stiff, providing a high degree of security and safety – a prerequisite when sailing offshore. All laminates are vacuum bagged for optimum quality and to ensure excellent core-to-skin bonding.
