Divinycell P chosen for TZV Gredelj’s new DMU train

Sandwich composites are increasingly being used for a wide range of train applications as train operators look to increase performance, cut weight, reduce noise and improve comfort. By using Divinycell P, train builders are now able to take advantage of the benefits of sandwich composites for interior components while meeting the latest FST (fire, smoke and toxicity) requirements.

The new DMU (diesel multiple unit) train from Croatian train builder TŽV Gredelj makes extensive use of Divinycell P with thin aluminum skins for the train floors and other interior panels. Apart from reducing weight without compromising strength,

Divinycell P was chosen for this application to eliminate internal structural noise and thereby provide passengers with a much quieter travelling experience. In addition to supplying core materials, Diab also provided TZV Gredelj with engineering support.

TŽV Gredelj’s new DMU has been developed for regional traffic duties. It is a three-part train set comprised of two end motor modules with driver’s cabs and one middle motor module without a driver’s cab.

TZV Gredelj has been producing train rolling stock for more than 117 years. Its main production facility in Zagreb covers a total area of 350,000 m2 (3,768,000 ft2), of which 80,000 m2 (861,113 ft2) is covered.

As well as being the principle supplier of train sets to the Croatian railway authorities, over 40% of TZV Gredelj production is exported. Its rolling stock is in operation around the world — everywhere from Argentina to Saudi Arabia.
